Journaling Classes

Journaling Through Breast Cancer

After surviving stage 3 breast cancer and being treated at the Dubin Breast Center at Mount Sinai, I volunteered to lead a class on Journaling through Breast Cancer for my clinic.  I recovered from cancer right after COVID and there were no writing classes at the time, so I created the kind of class I would have wanted to take.  It meets the third Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. online.

Journaling for Joy

I first started teaching my class on Journaling Through Difficult Times at Riverdale Senior Services as a reaction to the situational depression I was feeling as a creative person stymied by the changing world I was living in after the 2024 election.  To my surprise, not only have I found joy and inspiration in teaching to my peers, but also have found a new way of looking at life to find joy everyday.

I am constantly inspired by my own class.

The members are all different kinds of creative people - a cellist from the Yonkers Philharmonic, a published poet, a multi-exhibited visual artist, a prominent entertainment journalist, the first female owner of a funeral home in Brooklyn, among others - we have inspired each other every session.  This has turned into an artistic group therapy session for finding our creative joy.

Over the course of 90 minutes, we are given two prompts - uniquely created by the time we live in and the seasons - and we all write for 12 minutes. There is no judgment. Then we share our work with each other.

Some of the prompts have included:

Describe your life as a work of art
Create Your own Barbie doll
Share three micro-joys you have recently experienced

It is a truly uplifting experience!

Writing Classes

I also teach classes on Writing Erotic Romance, Getting Published Today, as well as Memoir Writing.

I find Lori’s class fabulous. She exudes the joy she encourages us to write about using creative, engaging prompts. I am learning to find MY joy.

Elaine G. Flores,

Journaling for Joy

There's a reason I've been represented by Lori Perkins for so many years. Quite simply, she is the consummate professional, a no BS hard worker who plays the publishing game the way it should be played. Lori Perkins is fair and honest in all her dealings. We should all be so lucky to have an agent like Lori Perkins. I know I am.

Cecilia Tan

Award-winning author of Slow Surrender

Lori has been an excellent editor for my work. She delves into my characters with empathy and perspective and always makes suggestions that improve the manuscript. Her commends helped me to structure my books and to add depth to the relationships. Without her, there would be no Magic University.

Paul M. Sammon,

Best-selling author of Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner

Lori's clothed, so many different deals for me for so many different books, it's been dazzling. Film history, pop-culture studies, horror anthologies, academic works, biographies, fiction and more; none would have reached port without her steering hand, particularly my Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner, a cinematic study that has now achieved the staggering feat of remaining in continual print for the last 30 years. It's taken one hell of an agent--and friend--to rack up those sorts of stats.
